Nusantara is planning to use a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas as the city's gas source, in keeping with the new capital's vision of net zero emissions.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) is aiming to ensure that electricity and gas networks in Indonesia's new capital (IKN), Nusantara, begin operating from August 2024.

"It is targeted to start to be operational in August 2024," the deputy for facilities and infrastructure at OIKN, Silvia Halim, said here on Monday.

Halim informed that the OIKN has decided that the provision of gas will be carried out by state-run gas distributor PT PGN Tbk, while the supply of electricity will be carried out by state-owned electricity company PLN.

She said that the progress of the 1A construction phase of the government's core area in Nusantara has reached 70 percent.

"Basically, the progress of the construction of KIPP 1A IKN, which is targeted for operation in August this year, has reached 70 percent. It includes infrastructures such as roads, drainage, drinking water, and government offices, as well as flats for civil servants," she added.

In addition to basic infrastructure, which is being built using the state budget, construction projects by private investors have been initiated since the first groundbreaking in September 2023, including a hotel and hospital project, and they are targeted to become operational in August 2024.

According to Law Number 3/2022 concerning the National Capital, Nusantara is planning to use a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas as the city's gas source, in keeping with the new capital's vision of net zero emissions.

Even though natural gas is considered a clean energy source, it is not renewable. Therefore, it is planned that Nusantara will produce and export solar energy equivalent to the amount of energy derived from natural gas to achieve a 100-percent reading on the new and renewable energy key performance indicator (KPI).

As a forest city, Nusantara is being developed on the low-carbon development principle. The principle aims to support Indonesia's policies on slashing greenhouse gas emissions and maximizing the role of urban green spaces.
