"No threats," he stated at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, responding to concerns raised by some figures regarding intimidation or threats ahead of the country's elections to be held next month.
Mahfud said that turbulence occurring during a democracy festivity is normal.
"For me, it is normal. I have been participating in elections since 1971. I always follow the developments. The upheavals are normal. Hence, there is no threat," he remarked.
Mahfud said that the most important aspect is for the National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri) and civil servants to be as professional as possible during the elections.
Previously, the media reported that a 23-year-old man in East Java was arrested by police for writing threatening comments against one of the presidential candidates on a social media platform.
The General Election Commission (KPU) has announced three pairs of candidates for this year's presidential elections: Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD.
The ongoing election campaigns will take place until February 10, and Indonesians will vote on February 14.
