Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry stated that the purpose of the Presidential Instruction on Drinking Water and Sanitation is to help the community to access clean water through household networks.

"Our raw water supply needs to be followed up, used, and distributed through household channels," the ministry's secretary general, Mohammad Zainal Fatah, remarked on Thursday.

He noted that building household water networks is a big challenge faced by regional drinking water companies (PDAM).

"Therefore, the government has made a presidential instruction focusing on the utilization of clean water to be directly used and utilized by the community through household connections," Fatah remarked.

He also noted that the presidential instruction has currently been signed by relevant ministries.

"The presidential instruction is almost at the final point. The relevant ministries have signed the presidential instruction," he remarked.

He expressed hope that the Presidential Instruction on Drinking Water and Sanitation would be signed by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in the near future.

The Presidential Instruction on Drinking Water and Sanitation is one of the focuses of the PUPR Ministry's program in 2024, namely implementing infrastructure development.

The government, through the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), has initiated a Presidential Instruction regarding clean water and sanitation after being approved by President Jokowi at a limited meeting discussing the development of a drinking water supply system (SPAM).

The presidential instruction will come into effect next year, with a total budget of Rp16.6 trillion, not to build water treatment installation (IPA) infrastructure but to install a water network in each household in order to reach the target of 10 million household networks, Fatah stated.

The government has already included the IPA infrastructure development in the National Strategic Projects (PSN) and the regional ones.
