Jakarta (ANTARA) - The University of Indonesia (UI) is constructing a new interdisciplinary engineering (IDE) building to support its Faculty of Engineering's endeavors to produce graduates with global competence and competitiveness.

"The IDE building, which is currently under construction, does not only represent a new physical structure, but it also symbolizes collaboration and innovation," UI rector Ari Kuncoro said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The building is a big step toward creating an interdisciplinary teaching and learning environment at UI to produce broad-minded, critical, innovative, and collaborative graduates, he added.

The IDE building would also support the Faculty of Engineering's efforts to obtain highly reputable scientific publications and impactful product innovations, Kuncoro said.

Meanwhile, the dean of UI's Faculty of Engineering, Heri Hermansyah, said that the IDE building is being prepared as a home for future engineering studies, as the faculty founded three interdisciplinary institutes last year.

They are the Institute for Urban Planning and Smart Cities (IUS), the Institute for Energy Transition (IET), and the Institute for Biosystems and Bioengineering (IBB).

The three institutes are working to synergize interdisciplinary education and research on certain themes, regional and city planning, energy transition, and biological engineering, he said.

The IDE building, which will apply the green building concept, would later house the three institutes, an advanced laboratory, and research centers of the institutes, he informed.
