"The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Maritime Meteorological Station in Tanjung Priok warns of potential coastal flooding from January 21 to January 27, 2024," Head of Jakarta BPBD Isnawa AjiI remarked in a statement here on Sunday.
Ajil asked residents of the northern coastal area of Jakarta to be vigilant against the coastal flooding.
He explained that the new moon phase potentially increases the maximum sea tide height leading to coastal flooding that can affect Jakarta's northern coasts.
Therefore, he noted, residents in northern Jakarta such as Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Penjaringan, Pluit, Ancol, Kamal, Marunda, Cilincing, Kalibaru, and Muara Angke need to anticipate the impact of high sea tides that have the potential to cause coastal flooding.
According to him, the peak of the high sea tides happens between 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. local time.
BPBD urged residents to monitor the latest information about sea waves on the official BPBD website bpbd.jakarta.go.id/gelombanglaut.
Meanwhile, Head of the BMKG Maritime Meteorology Center Eko Prasetyo said that in addition to the new moon phase, coastal flooding might occur during the full moon.
The potential for coastal flooding will generally have an impact on community activities around ports, such as loading and unloading activities, daily activities in coastal residential areas, salt ponds, and inland fisheries.
Previously, the Jakarta BPBD asked the public to be aware of coastal flooding that could impact 10 locations in North Jakarta and West Jakarta, and to contact 112 for emergencies.
