Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is currently formulating a regulation on the establishment of a personal data protection (PDP) supervisory agency, the Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) Ministry has informed.

"We are devising a presidential regulation to establish the new agency. The draft is ready, and we have set the second quarter of this year as the targeted completion date for the formulation process," director general of informatics applications at the ministry, Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, said in Jakarta on Friday.

He informed that as per Law No. 27 of 2022 concerning Personal Data Protection, the PDP supervisory agency will be tasked with devising policies and strategies related to people's personal data protection and enforcing administrative provisions of the law itself.

The supervisory agency will stand as an independent institution that directly answers to the president, he added.

Law No. 27 of 2022, which contains 16 chapters and 76 articles, was passed on October 17, 2022, by the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Kominfo Ministry.

The ministry also started preparing two derivative regulations to complement the PDP Law, including the government regulation on PDP as an executive regulation.

Since the third quarter of 2023, the ministry has been inviting the public to provide inputs and suggestions for the formulation of the draft government regulation.

Currently, the PDP Law is under a two-year transitional period, awaiting actual implementation in October this year.

During the transitional period, the government has been urging personal data managers and processors as well as all relevant stakeholders, both from the public and private sectors, to comprehend the law and prepare for its implementation in their respective environments.
