Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated that Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Islamic organization in the country, had been making huge contributions to the nation's unity and integrity.

He made the statement in his speech at the commemoration of the 101st anniversary of NU in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, followed online via NU's channel on YouTube.

"NU has been remarkably contributing to the efforts in safeguarding this republic, Pancasila, and unity in diversity," he remarked.

Jokowi congratulated NU for its 101 years of existence, thanking the organization for its commitment to defending and protecting Indonesia's integrity.

"I would like to congratulate NU on its 101st anniversary. Thank you for your commitment to safeguarding the integrity of this unitary republic," he stated.

In his speech, Jokowi also noted that Indonesia's way of promoting tolerance through religious moderation had inspired the international community.

"This is owing to the commitment and hard work of ulemas and santris (Islamic boarding school students) from across our motherland of Indonesia," he pointed out.

Furthermore, Jokowi encouraged NU to continue to make contributions for the sake of bringing Indonesia to a brighter future.

For its 101st anniversary commemoration, NU adopts the theme "Stepping Up Performance, Leading Indonesia Into Glory."

As cited from the organization's website, Deputy Chairman of NU Central Executive Board (PBNU) Amin Said Husni explained that the theme was chosen to spotlight the importance of celebrating the anniversary by bolstering the quality of NU's organizational performance.

He said that NU views the anniversary as a moment to solidify its organization and networks in an effort to help the nation achieve the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045.

Jokowi was joined at the event by high-ranking officials, including Commander of the National Armed Forces (TNI) General Agus Subiyanto, Chief of the National Police (Polri) Police-General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, and several ministers.

Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates Suhail Al Mazrouei also attended the event.
