The figure surpassed the total number of foreign tourist arrivals in 2022 that only reached 5.89 million.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded that cumulatively, the number of foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia during the period from January to December 2023 had reached 11.68 million, thereby indicating an increase of 98.30 percent from 2022.

"It rose 98.30 percent as compared to the same period in 2022," Acting Head of BPS Amalia A. Widyasanti stated while delivering the Official Statistics News in Jakarta on Thursday.

According to Widyasanti, the figure surpassed the total number of foreign tourist arrivals in 2022 that only reached 5.89 million.

In December 2023, the number of foreign tourist arrivals reached 1.14 million, an increase of 22.91 percent as compared to November 2023. An increase was recorded in December from the earlier recorded number of foreign tourist arrivals that had been declining since September 2023.

However, the figure is still lower than the number recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic, as 1.38 million foreign tourist arrivals were clocked in December 2019.

In December 2023, the foreign tourist arrivals were dominated by tourists from Malaysia, at 18.45 percent; Singapore, 16.41 percent; and Australia, 11.87 percent.

Meanwhile, Indonesian tourist trips throughout 2023 had reached 7.52 million. The figure showed a drastic increase of 112.26 percent as compared to the previous year's number of 3.54 million trips.

"In 2023, the number of national tourist trips is always above 500 thousand every month," Widyasanti stated.

The highest number of Indonesian tourist trips was recorded in July 2023, at 816.03 thousand, while the lowest was recorded in June 2023, at 508.25 thousand trips.

Southeast Asian countries are still dominating in the top 10 countries visited by Indonesian tourists.

Malaysia is the main destination for Indonesian tourists traveling abroad, with a share of 27.98 percent, which showed an increase as compared to the previous year.

After Malaysia, the other nine countries are Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Japan, China, Australia, and South Korea.

Saudi Arabia has the second-biggest share after Malaysia, with 17.41 percent, followed by Singapore, with 17 percent.
