Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) called on youngsters in GP Ansor, the youth wing of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), to participate in making the 2024 General Elections a success and ensuring the sustainability of development in Indonesia.

"An election is a people's festival. Hence, I would like to ask ulemas, religious figures, academics, and Ansor youths to support the upcoming general elections and ensure Indonesia's sustainable development," Jokowi remarked in his opening speech for the GP Ansor's XVI Congress in Jakarta on Friday.

Nahdlatul Ulama is the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, with estimated membership of over 95 million people as of 2021.

In the presence of about 2,400 Ansor youths, Jokowi emphasized that young people would emerge as leaders and play decisive roles in the future.

Bearing that in mind, the president stated that all elements of the Indonesian nation should take part in ensuring the smooth running of the general elections, scheduled for February 14, as the country's crucial national agenda.

"Comprehensive support is essential. We must commit to democratic, direct, secure, and orderly elections that will bring joy instead of fear. The unity and integrity of the nation are paramount," he stressed.

The president then invited GP Ansor to stand in the front line for ensuring successful elections, serving as guardians of Indonesia's brotherhood and integrity.

"I want you to help placate situations if tension rises," he told attending youths.

He further encouraged Ansor youths to make efforts to help the nation achieve the Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision.

"We can only achieve the Golden Indonesia Vision by striving relentlessly. Our duty is beyond escorting the elections, as we also need to help the government properly fulfill its tasks to make Indonesia glorious in the future," he emphasized.

Jokowi also drew attention to the ongoing Israeli aggression in Palestine, urging GP Ansor to show support for the Palestinian nation in the name of humanity.

"Let us all fight for humanitarian values and Palestine's independence by pushing for the two-state solution. We should stand alongside Palestinians in their struggle for independence," he concluded.
