Indonesia has been enjoying a sound level of harmony in its bilateral ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under the leadership of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE Husin Bagis stated.
"Everything is good, thanks to close relations fostered between President Jokowi and his counterpart from Abu Dhabi (UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed/MBZ)," he remarked after meeting with Jokowi at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Friday.
He highlighted that Jokowi is the only president who addresses MBZ as "brother."
"Other leaders address him as 'His Highness,'" he noted.
Bagis then affirmed that close relations between the two leaders had further elevated the level of investment, trade, and tourist visits between Indonesia and the UAE.
"Moreover, we now can find (Indonesian) imams in Abu Dhabi. Indonesian nationals work in Abu Dhabi as imams," he remarked.
The ambassador also stated that with President Jokowi at the driving seat, Indonesia has been successful in roping in more investment from the gulf state.
"We spoke about aluminum, nickel, downstreaming policy, food estate. God Willing, we will be successful in promoting them all," he remarked while referring to his topics of discussion during his meeting with the president.
Bagis then spoke of having suggested that the Indonesian Government create a special economic zone dedicated to a food estate program in Papua region, adding that he will make efforts to draw investment from the UAE to the special zone.
He also drew attention to Indonesia's future capital city currently under construction in East Kalimantan Province, saying that the UAE is awaiting Indonesia to offer workable projects in the city.
Bagis revealed that President Jokowi is planning to once again visit Abu Dhabi soon before MBZ pays him a return visit after the 2024 General Elections.
