President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) earlier announced Karnavian as the top security minister, replacing Mahfud MD, who resigned to focus on his vice presidential campaign.
Karnavian will serve as an acting minister until Jokowi names the new coordinating minister.
“Mr Tito Karnavian is among the senior ministers under the coordinating ministry. Hence, the President has decided to appoint him as the acting coordinating minister,” Dwipayana said in Jakarta.
He added that Jokowi considered Karnavian’s background, including his long tenure in the political and security field, before appointing him as the acting minister.
Dwipayana said that Karnavian, who has been serving as the Home Affairs Minister since October 23, 2019, is also capable of cooperating with other stakeholders, including institutions outside the government.
He emphasized that Karnavian’s appointment will not adversely affect the performance of his ministry or the coordinating ministry.
As a good supporting system is in place, Karnavian is capable of continuing the work paved by Mahfud and his predecessors properly, he added.
“I believe his appointment will not have adverse effects. Our government system is working well. Moreover, he will be assisted by deputies in the coordinating ministry; hence, there will be no difficulty for him to conduct his duty as the acting coordinating minister,” Dwipayana stated.
He added that changes in the ministry’s top leadership will not hinder the preparation and conduct of the 2024 general election, which will take place on February 14.
“I believe, there are no concerns about the election conduct as all processes proceed well,” he added.
