This vehicle aid has been provided as a means to help Papuan people deal with emergency situations, such as in the event of famine.
Jayapura (ANTARA) - Minister of Social Affairs, Tri Rismaharini, on Tuesday handed over assistance in the form of four cars to the Diocese of Jayapura and several churches in the provinces of Papua and Highland Papua.

"This vehicle aid has been provided as a means to help Papuan people deal with emergency situations, such as in the event of famine," she informed in Jayapura, Papua province.

Rismaharini expressed the hope that the four-wheeled vehicles will help the diocese and churches expedite the delivery of food aid to disaster-hit regions.

"By using these vehicles, the diocese and churches will no longer need to wait for delivery of aid from Jakarta to Papua. That way, they will be able to assist disaster-affected people in regions post-haste," she explained.

The minister further said that her office has provided buffer stocks of food to every church and diocese in Papua region in the hope of expediting aid delivery to the people.

"It should be noted that distances between villages in Papua are farther than those between villages in other regions of Indonesia," she pointed out.

She added that the Ministry of Social Affairs has been ensuring close coordination between its social barns in Papua region with several churches located in Highland Papua to prevent delays in the distribution of food aid in the event of disasters.

Meanwhile, Jayapura Bishop Yanuarius Theofilus Matopay You extended the diocese's appreciation to the central government for the vehicle assistance.

"We would like to thank the Ministry of Social Affairs for the vehicles that are expected to assist us in helping people," he said.
