"Hopefully, everyone can restrain themselves, maintain conduciveness to the situation, and be honest and fair during the election," Muhammad Cholil Nafis, MUI Chairman for Da'wah and Brotherhood, told ANTARA on Wednesday.
To ensure that the situation remains conducive, he appealed to the public to monitor the vote-counting process and peacefully address any concerns through legal channels.
"Hopefully, the election will be fair and peaceful," Nafis stated.
During the elections, all people would exercise their right to vote freely and consciously to elect a leader who would lead the government in the coming five-year term, he said.
He also expressed hope that the elected contestants would not be arrogant and that the contestants who had not been elected would not be discouraged.
"Those who win should not be arrogant, and those who lose should not be disappointed," Nafis remarked.
"I hope that, like the last election, the candidates can also work together to build the nation over the next five years," he stated.
Indonesia held the general elections on Wednesday, February 14, with around 204.8 million voters expected to elect a president and vice president, as well as members of the House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Representatives Council (DPD), and Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD) at the province, city, and district levels.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) will recap votes from all over the country until March 20.
