Lumajang, East Java (ANTARA) - Mount Semeru, a volcano standing at 3,676 meters above sea level and located on the borders of Lumajang and Malang, East Java, erupted four times on Thursday (Feb 15).

Officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post Sigit Rian Alfian noted in a written report in Lumajang, Thursday evening, that the first eruption occurred at 1:13 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), the second eruption was recorded at 4:59 a.m. WIB, the third eruption took place at 6:28 a.m. WIB, while the last eruption occurred at 10:54 a.m. WIB.

“Mount Semeru erupted on February 15, 2024, at 1:13 a.m. WIB, with a column of volcanic ash reaching approximately 700 meters above the mountain peak (about 4,376 meters above sea level),” he stated.

Based on the observation, a thick greyish column of volcanic ash headed north. The eruption was recorded by the seismograph, with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 143 seconds.

Thereafter, at 4:59 a.m. WIB, another eruption occurred. The observed column of volcanic ash reached about 800 meters above the mountain peak, or approximately 4,476 meters above sea level.

The second eruption’s column of volcanic ash was white to greyish in color, thick in intensity, and headed northeast. The seismograph recorded a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 132 seconds.

The third eruption occurred at 6:28 a.m. WIB, with the height of volcanic ash reaching about 1,000 meters above the mountain top (approximately 4,676 meters above sea level).

The third eruption’s column of volcanic ash was white to greyish in color, thick in intensity, and headed northeast. The seismograph recorded a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 101 seconds.

The fourth eruption occurred at 10:54 a.m. WIB. The eruption’s visual was unobserved, and the seismograph recorded a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 159 seconds.
