Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA) - Andalas University (Unand) is striving for international recognition by seeking accreditation from a German accreditation agency for four study programs offered by two of its faculties.

"To meet the global standard, Unand has again proposed that ASIIN accredit its four study programs," Unand rector Efa Yonnedi said in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province, on Friday.

The programs comprise undergraduate and postgraduate nursing degrees offered by the Faculty of Nursing as well as undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics degrees offered by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

According to Yonnedi, ASIIN, which stands for Akkreditierungsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik, is based in Germany.

It has been recognized by Indonesia's Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry for accrediting study programs in engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, computer sciences, medicine, and economics.

He said that ASIIN accreditation would affect Unand's academic environment, as one of its benefits is attracting reputed teaching staff from other countries to teach at the public university.

In return, reputed Unand lecturers will also get opportunities to teach at overseas universities, he said, adding that both international scholars and students can study at Unand.

With international accreditation from ASIIN, Unand's graduates would also get better access to job markets, he added.

Unand is a public university whose main campus is located in the Limau Manis neighborhood of Padang.

According to its official website, Unand, which currently has 15 faculties and 156 undergraduate and postgraduate programs, was officially inaugurated by Indonesia's first vice president, Mohammad Hatta, on December 23, 1955.

As per official records, it is the fourth public university to be inaugurated by the Indonesian government.

Unand has been classified as a Cluster I university since 2016, and since 2021, the government has placed it in the group of Indonesia's reputable universities with legal entity (PTN-BH).

In addition to its main campus in Limau Manis, Unand, which currently has over 32 thousand students, also has campuses in the districts of Payakumbuh and Dharmasraya.
