Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA) - Andalas University (Unand) in Padang, West Sumatra Province, dispatched six members of its nursing faculty on Sunday to Cianjur District in West Java Province to join a humanitarian mission there.

They would provide the district's earthquake survivors with healthcare service from December 4 to December 10," Unand Rector Prof. Yuliandri noted in a statement that ANTARA quoted here, Monday.

The Unand team members comprise Gusti Sumarsih Agoes, Elvi Oktarina, Mahathir, Mohd Jamil, Zafitra Patriorga, and Atih Rahayu Ningsih. During the community service, Agoes was appointed to lead the team, he remarked.

The deployment of Unand's personnel to Cianjur demonstrates the university's solidarity with the quake victims, he affirmed while adding that they are coordinated under Unand's Research and Community Development Institute (LPPM).

Prior to their departure, Unand had coordinated with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and disaster response networks on the ground, Yuliandri remarked.

During their mission, Unand team members would not merely assist those in need of healthcare service but they would also observe the people's conditions and identify their needs during the post-disaster emergency period.

Apart from sending its healthcare workers, Unand also delivers food aid, including beef rendang, to the quake survivors, he added.

Meanwhile, Unand's LPPM Head, Uyung Gatot, said, in the past, the university had also deployed its humanitarian team members to the disaster zones of earthquakes in Pasaman in West Sumatra and in Majene, West Sulawesi.

The local authorities stated that there were several teams of humanitarian workers on the ground.

To this end, Unand team members focus on treating the quake survivors in need of postoperative care and psychosocial consultation as well as providing food aid packages, he added.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Cianjur District in West Java Province on November 21 at 1:21 p.m. local time, killing at least 318 people and injuring 7,729 others.

The quake, whose epicenter was located about 10 km away from Cianjur, at a depth of 10 km, also damaged at least 2,345 houses and forced 73,693 residents to take refuge.

Despite the absence of a tsunami, the quake's tremors were not only felt by residents in disaster zones but also by those in the areas of Jakarta, Bogor, and Bekasi, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), some 595 of the 7,729 residents sustaining injuries had been injured seriously.
