Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, met with President of the French National Assembly, Madame Yaël Braun-Pivet, to discuss issues on women and elections in Indonesia.

"As fellow female leaders, we must strive for gender equality and women's empowerment. We feel that it is not easy to become leaders in the world of politics," Marani noted in a statement from her office on Wednesday.

The bilateral meeting was held at the Palais Bourbon, the French parliament building in Paris on Tuesday (March 5), as part of Maharani's working visit to the 2024 Women Speakers' Summit in Paris, France.

According to Maharani, the Women Speaker Summit, which discusses women's issues, is important at a time when the world is experiencing various crises. With a wealth of experience and ideas, female parliamentary leaders can intensify cooperation in achieving gender equality and women's empowerment.

Madame Braun-Pivet also supports improved bilateral relations between the two countries. The discussion between Maharani and Braun-Pivet took place in a cordial atmosphere.

At the meeting, Braun-Pivet even sought information about the experience gained by Indonesia that had recently held the 2024 elections for president and legislative members.

Meanwhile, elections in France are held in stages between the legislative and presidential elections.

She then admitted to a persisting lack of access for women in France to hold important positions.

"In principle, we already have equal rights between men and women, but for real opportunities, it still takes time," she pointed out.

The 2024 Women Speakers' Summit will discuss several women's issues divided into two discussion forum agendas. "Education in equality, health, and the fight against violence against women" is the theme of the first forum, while the second forum discussed gender equality, parity and empowerment in politics, and women's role models.
