Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) emphasized the key role of families and the community in building a child protection system to prevent violence in educational units.

“Activating the role of families, peer groups, and social media in building a child protection system is needed for the best interests of children,” KPAI member Aris Adi Leksono stated when contacted here on Tuesday.

Leksono highlighted the increasing number of cases of violence in educational units in 2024, with one of the victims dying due to violence.

Apart from the role of the family and environment, the KPAI emphasized the need for education and training for teachers regarding child protection competencies and skills.

In addition, controls should be put in place on social media to make it child-friendly.

"Educational unit institutions need to strengthen referral system-based child protection services," Leksono remarked.

Furthermore, the involvement and empowerment of the role of teachers' professional organizations are also considered essential.

The commission is seeking a proportional ratio of counseling teachers in educational units and is encouraging the strengthening of teachers' basic competence in psychology and counseling.

"Positive discipline training is needed for parents and teachers," he underlined.

Moreover, periodic evaluations are deemed necessary across ministries, institutions, regional task forces, and teams for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in Educational Unit Environments (PPKSP) regarding joint efforts to prevent and handle violence in educational units.

Earlier, when contacted on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, Leksono called on regional governments to intensify the dissemination of information on regulations on the prevention and handling of violence in educational units.

He remarked that one of the regulations is the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister’s Regulation Number 46 of 2023 on the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Educational Unit Environments.
