The commitment was marked by the launch of the Biodiversity Management Plan on Monday to preserve biodiversity around Nusantara.
"Nusantara is a region with high biodiversity level, as well as its endemic (flora and fauna species)," said the director of forestry and water resource utilization and development at OIKN, Pungky Widiaryanto, at a press briefing on Monday.
Within a 50-kilometer radius of Nusantara, researchers have spotted 3,889 animal species, including 168 species of mammals, 454 species of birds, 206 species of herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians), five species of arachnids, and more than three thousand species of insects, Widiaryanto informed.
They have also found 1,369 species of fish, 826 marine invertebrates, and 735 species of plants in the area.
Of these, 440 species are on the International Union of Conservation of Nature's Red List, meaning they are either vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered, making conservation efforts necessary.
Widiaryanto said that the OIKN's plan will include special mitigation implementation for critical ecosystems and species.
Under the action plan, the authority will also identify sensitive habitats before clearing land for development as well as provide training and capacity building to stakeholders regarding biodiversity management.
OIKN also pledged to carry out development that pays attention to wildlife conservation, such as preventing land clearing or logging during animal breeding season.
It will also analyze habitats that are suitable for flora or fauna that are to be relocated, in addition to tree conservation and restoration of degraded ecosystems.
The plan will also pay attention to animal movement by building underpasses or overpass tunnels for wildlife crossing, ensuring their mobility and safety.
OIKN has expressed the hope that the biodiversity management plan will support the development of Nusantara as a sustainable forest city and contribute to the achievement of national and global biodiversity conservation goals.
The plan will be implemented for five years: from 2024 until 2029.
