Jakarta (ANTARA) - Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR) has asked Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi to urge airlines to provide cheaper airfares during the 2024 Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus period.

"The tickets should be cheaper during Eid with around 190 million people expected to travel (for the exodus)," chair of Commission V, Lasarus, said during a working meeting on homecoming exodus readiness here on Tuesday.

The working meeting was attended by the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, the National Police (Polri), the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).

He expressed the hope that cheaper airfares would ensure people do not feel economically burdened by traveling to meet their families.

"We hope there will be no complaints from the public regarding expensive tickets," he said.

Earlier on Friday (March 29, 2024), Sumadi asked airlines not to raise airfares excessively or above the price ceiling during the Eid exodus period.

The minister emphasized that the government has set a price ceiling for transportation ticket prices that must be adhered to as it would allow transportation operators to make a profit without affecting people's purchasing power.

"Of course, there are sanctions for those (found) violating or exceeding the price ceiling. In this regard, we have coordinated with all operators as part of providing services to the community," he informed.

According to a survey carried out by the Ministry of Transportation, 193.6 million people are projected to participate in the homecoming exodus to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which is predicted to fall on April 10.

The homecoming exodus is predicted to peak from April 5–7, 2024.
