Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Wednesday sent humanitarian assistance worth Rp30 billion (around US$1.89 million) for the people of Palestine and Sudan.

At the send-off ceremony held at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta, he remarked that the assistance is a form of the Indonesian government’s commitment to maintaining world peace.

“The government is committed to maintaining world peace and participating actively in humanitarian missions for crises arising from both war and natural disasters,” Jokowi said.

He added that the Indonesian people are concerned about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Palestine, and the internal conflict in Sudan that has caused many victims.

"The aid sent today is worth Rp30 billion, in the form of medicines and health equipment as well as other assistance tailored to the needs in the field according to the official request of the governments of Egypt and Sudan," he explained.

Earlier, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs received diplomatic notes from Egypt and Sudan regarding a request for humanitarian assistance for the people there who are facing conflict and diseases.

In the note, the Egyptian government is expecting aid from the Indonesian government for Palestinian refugees who fled to Egypt due to Israel’s invasion of Gaza.

Jokowi said that the assistance delivery delegation is led by the Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Suharyanto.

The Indonesian government projected that assistance for civilians affected by the conflicts in Palestine and Sudan will arrive in Cairo, Egypt, and Port Sudan, Sudan, on April 4.

Israel’s attacks in Gaza have killed 32,333 people, leaving 74,694 people injured and 8,100 people missing, according to local authorities. Palestinians in northern and central Gaza, have fled to Rafah in the enclave's southern part.

Currently, there are more than 1.5 million Palestinian refugees in Rafah, which borders Egypt.
