The Ministry of Environment and Forestry previously estimated the addition of around 58 million kilograms or 57 thousand tons of waste during the Eid 2024 homecoming and return flow period.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has asked local governments to supervise waste management at public facilities, such as transportation facilities and tourist attractions, during the Eid 2024 homecoming flow.

At a press conference here on Friday, director general of waste, garbage, and hazardous toxic material management (PSLB3) at the ministry, Rosa Vivien Ratnawati, said that the ministry has issued Circular Letter (SE) Number 5 of 2024 concerning Control of Eid al-Fitr Waste.

The circular is aimed at managing waste in homecoming traffic areas, including bus terminals, stations, and tourist attractions.

"We urge the regional government to also supervise and manage waste at tourist attractions so that tourist attraction managers also become the parties we target to be able to manage waste and provide segregated waste bins," Ratnawati said.

To make the "Homecoming with Minimal Waste" push a success, the ministry has asked local governments and public facility managers to provide education and carry out campaigns, install segregated waste containers, and conduct further management of collected waste.

Managers of public facilities such as rest areas, bus terminals, airports, train stations, ports, and tourist attractions have been especially asked to coordinate with local governments regarding the management of waste.

"In fact, the regional government can ask the managers of rest areas and so on to carry out transportation and processing, as well as provide segregated waste bins," she said.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry previously estimated the addition of around 58 million kilograms or 57 thousand tons of waste during the Eid 2024 homecoming and return flow period.

The figure is based on the Ministry of Transportation's estimate that 193.6 million people will return home across Indonesia this year.
