Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief of the National Police (Polri), General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, sent off travelers participating in Polri’s free Eid al-Fitr homecoming program in Jakarta on Saturday.

He said that the free buses would take participants to four destinations: West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java.

Listyo expressed his hope that other ministries and institutions could offer similar free homecoming programs.

“I hope that other ministries and institutions could offer similar free homecoming programs,” Listyo said at a press conference after the event.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi and Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), General Agus Subiyanto, also attended the send-off event.

Listyo, Budi, and Agus inspected the health facilities provided for the travelers as well as the travelers’ condition.

Before the departure, the bus drivers underwent a health check to ensure they were not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Listyo said that participants registered for the program through an online system and police stations.

He affirmed that if travelers fail to secure a seat in the program, Polri will coordinate with other institutions that still have available quotas in their free homecoming programs to assist them.

Meanwhile, head of Polri’s Traffic Corps, Inspector General Aan Suhanan, said that the free program is also being offered by 19 regional police offices. In total, 58,350 bus seats have been provided for free under the program.

He said that the program is held to minimize traffic accidents that occur often during the Eid travel. During the Eid travel in 2023, there were around 3,500 accidents in 15 days, which left 554 people dead.

The Ministry of Transportation estimates that 193.6 million people will join the Eid travel this year.
