Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police, through the 2024 Ketupat Operation, recorded 199 traffic accidents in several regions during the 2024 Eid al-Fitr homecoming on Wednesday, April 10.

"We recorded 199 traffic accidents on April 10," spokesperson for the 2024 Ketupat Operation from the National Police Public Relations Division, Senior Commissioner, Harry Goldenhardt, stated in Jakarta, Thursday.

According to Goldenhardt, of the 199 incidents, 41 people died, 41 were seriously injured, and 271 incurred minor injuries, with total material losses amounting to Rp558 million (US$35 thousand).

In comparison with the previous day, some 301 traffic accidents were recorded, with 26 people having lost their lives, 44 people seriously injured, and 386 people with minor injuries, he remarked.

On Thursday, another traffic accident occurred involving a Rosalia Indah bus at KM 370 of the Semarang-Batang toll road, Central Java, killing seven passengers.

The bus driver, who survived the accident, was injured and admitted to not being fit enough to drive. It is suspected that a microsleep occurred, thereby causing the bus to stray from the route.

Goldenhardt also conveyed the National Police Chief's message to people celebrating Eid al-Fitr to remain careful while driving and obey traffic regulations.

"Safety is the most important thing until you reach your destination," he said, quoting the Police Chief.

He affirmed that the police would continue to maintain security and public order by being present in community activities, both providing services and patrolling potentially vulnerable areas during the 2024 Ketupat Operation.

He suggested the public to follow updated information from the National Police regarding developments in the situation and conditions of traffic, tourist attractions, as well as pay attention to weather conditions and maintain the physical condition of vehicles.

Moreover, the National Police is ready to serve and provide security for all homecoming travelers for traffic security, Goldernhardt remarked.
