The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has readied a total of 50 emergency tents to accommodate survivors of the landslides that struck Tana Toraja District, South Sulawesi Province.
The emergency tents have been prepared to provide shelter for 77 survivors from 23 families in the district, BNPB's Deputy for Emergency Management, Fajar Setyawan, noted in the agency's statement received here on Tuesday (April 16).
He said the surviving victims are the residents of Manggau Village in Makale Sub-district and Lembang Randan Batu Village in South Makale Sub-district that were hit by the landslides triggered by torrential rains on Saturday (April 13) night.
Setyawan further stated that each of the tents would be equipped with mattresses, blankets, and sufficient amounts of logistics, including food.
"The most urgent matter currently is the fulfillment of the basic needs of the survivors since they are currently taking shelter in a local church," he remarked after directly visiting Manggau Village.
He affirmed that the BNPB is still striving to identify the swiftest way to deliver the assistance to the landslide survivors.
Based on his inspection, Setyawan stated that the agency personnel would have to undertake a hike for about 45 minutes to reach the affected regions located 1,300 meters above sea level.
However, he ensured that the BNPB and central and regional governments would make all-out efforts to distribute assistance to the victims at the earliest.
"We will prioritize it (the aid distribution)," he emphasized.
Based on data from BNPB's Disaster Management Operations Control Center, the landslides resulted in 20 casualties.
Of the total 20 dead victims, 16 were found in Manggau Village, while the other four were found in Lembang Randan Batu Village.
