Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is preparing a regulation to prevent violence against children via online platforms and the Internet, the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture's Deputy for Quality Improvement of Children, Women, and Youth, Woro Srihastuti Sulistyaningrum, said.

"This is a decree supervised by the Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry. The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture acts as an inter-ministerial committee,"she said here on Monday.

She noted that children are now increasingly familiar with devices, including accessing the Internet. Meanwhile, parental guidance and assistance to children has its limitations.

The ease of accessing the Internet without guidance, she explained, makes children very vulnerable to digital bullying, online sexual violence and extortion, scams, pornography, and exploitation.

According to her, the regulation, which will be in the form of a presidential decree, will serve as a road map to provide clear and integrated directions, guidelines, and mechanisms for all parties involved in child protection.

These include children, parents, teachers, caregivers, Internet service providers, law enforcement officials, and civil society organizations.

"Eventually, this will lead to the (supervision) of families," she said.

Several ministries/agencies are helping prepare the regulation, such as the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry, the Religious Affairs Ministry, the Health Ministry, and the Social Affairs Ministry.

The National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) and the Center for Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis (PPATK) are also participating in the drafting of the regulation.

Earlier, the government said that it has finalized a presidential regulation (Perpres) on protecting children from online games in response to rampant cases of violence, pornography, sexual harassment, and bullying attributed to the influence of such games.

The government will continue to monitor online games that contain violence and consider the possibility of blocking certain games, such as Free Fire.
