The COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on November 11–12.
The Director General of Climate Control and Change at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Laksmi Dhewanthi, said that an initial meeting to discuss the second NDC was held with the relevant ministries and institutions on February 21.
“At COP27, there were several decisions that were mandated to the parties, one of which is that countries must submit a new NDC no later than March 2025,” she told a press conference on Monday.
The NDC, or national contribution to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the context of global climate change, was created in keeping with the mandate of the Paris Agreement.
Dhewanthi noted that there are several differences between the first and second NDC documents.
The second NDC will be in line with the scenario of limiting global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
It will also include Indonesia's 2030 FOLU Net Sink target, additional sectors and sub-sectors, emission levels with the reference year set at 2019, and a commitment to strengthening climate adaptation, action, and reporting systems.
“By having the second NDC, Indonesia’s position would be recognized more as a country that has implemented the commitment and mandate to convey the second NDC,” she explained.
Regarding the emission reduction target, she said that the calculation is still underway because the inclusion of additional sectors and other factors is being considered.
Earlier, Indonesia set a target of slashing greenhouse gas emissions by 31.89 percent through its own efforts and 43.20 percent with international support, in line with the enhanced NDC goal for 2030.
