Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) assessed that Indonesia's hydrometeorological information system is worthy of being a model for adoption by participating countries in the 10th World Water Forum (WWF).

Head of the BMKG Applied Climate Services Center Marjuki remarked here on Wednesday that the hydrometeorological information system (SIH3), which has been developed since 2012, helps maximize the delivery of early disaster warnings to the public.

According to Marjuki, the system is one of the determining factors for the success of disaster risk reduction and management policies realized through easy access to data and information.

For instance, on April 11-20, the BMKG was able to detect the start of the season and the series of days without rain across Indonesia, which became a reference for preventing agricultural land drought, water scarcity, and forest and land fires.

"Climate risks, such as floods, drought, and landslides, are caused by extreme rainfall patterns and weather. These risks cause significant challenges for the community that have been predicted every 10 days or even three hours in advance," he remarked.

To this end, the agency assessed that the development and provision of hydroclimate information services are crucial to reducing risks and supporting adaptive planning and management.

Such use of technology is also in line with the missions of the 10th WWF that are related to climate change mitigation and eradication of the gap between challenges and capacity of each country in water resources, climate, food, energy, and health management.

BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati stated that the gap exists due to differences in each country's ability in science and technology.

"Through the current use of technology, we can end it and prepare to overcome the climate crisis together," she remarked.

The 10th WWF, scheduled to be held in Bali on May 18-25, raises "Water for Shared Prosperity" as its theme.

The upcoming forum will cover six sub-themes: water security and prosperity; water for humans and nature; disaster risk reduction and management; governance, cooperation, and hydro diplomacy; sustainable water finance; and knowledge and innovation.
