Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration has urged villages to determine their potential so that it can be developed to improve the economy of the residents.

"Potential or the utilization of resources is the most important, it is the main thing," the ministry's director general of economic and investment development, Harlina Sulistyorini, said on Tuesday.

She made the statement at a webinar entitled "Improving the Performance of Village-Owned Enterprises by Developing an Innovation Ecosystem," which was aired on the YouTube channel of the Yogyakarta Community Empowerment and Training Center (BBPPM).

Giving an example, she said that if a village has the potential for developing corn, it should develop corn instead of fish for business.

Sulistyorini added that the optimization of villages' economic improvement can be carried out through collaborative development between villages that have similar potential.

She expressed optimism that through collaboration, the potential can be developed maximally.

"Collaboration or cooperation is needed to maximize the potential and develop the resources," she said.

She also appealed to village-owned enterprises (BUMDes) to play a role in managing their village's potential and resources to maximize the community's economic improvement.

However, she asked BUMDes to ensure their products are marketed to reach the right market.

"If you already have products that are fit for sale, you have to think about where you will sell them from early (on)," she told BUMDes.

In addition to village potential and resources, several other opportunities can likely be managed by BUMDes for business activities.

Those opportunities include distribution and trade networks, financial services, and public services related to basic needs for the community, such as electricity and sanitation.

She said that those things can be processed into business activities that can improve the economy of village communities.
