Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) provided ready-to-use fund totaling Rp2.5 billion, or US$155 thousand, for flood and landslide handling to the provincial government and seven districts in South Sulawesi.

Chief of BNPB Suharyanto noted in his statement here on Tuesday that especially for Luwu District, his side has provided Rp1 billion for emergency handling of floods and landslides for the January-May 2024 period.

"And another Rp500 million because there are casualties in Luwu," he added.

In detail, the ready-to-use funding of Rp2.5 billion for disaster emergency response comprises Rp500 million for the South Sulawesi Province, Rp500 million for Luwu District, Rp250 million for Enrekang District, and Rp200 million for Sidrap, Wajo, and North Luwu, respectively.

In addition, the districts of Pinrang and Sinjai received Rp150 million each.

The disaster-affected regions in South Sulawesi also received logistical support and equipment in the form of rubber boats and one engine, two generators, two refugee tents, 50 family tents, 250 food packages, 200 instant food packages, and 50 folding mattresses.

Moreover, 200 hygiene kits, 200 blankets, 200 mattresses, five water purifiers, and 50 folding beds were provided.

The BNPB had earlier distributed assistance worth Rp250 million in March and April to Luwu District that bore the maximum impact of the landslide and flooding.

BNPB Chief Suharyanto admitted that seven districts in South Sulawesi experienced disasters, such as floods, flash floods, landslides, and land cracking.

"In general, all emergency responses have been carried out, but it is a bit difficult now in Luwu and North Luwu districts," he stated.

Meanwhile, House member Ashabul Kahfi expressed hope that the fund assistance from BNPB would soon be used for handling disaster in the region.

"BNPB is here to bring assistance, and of course, we really appreciate it. The ready-to-use funds are not large in number but are quite helpful, so they can be used in accordance with the target for the disaster-affected seven districts," he explained.
