"At the end of the day, we do not want Indonesia to only get benefits from the CCS industry through land utilization or others," the ministry's deputy for sovereignty, maritime, and energy coordination, Jodi Mahardi, said on Wednesday.
He made the statement at the Indonesia Petroleum Association Conference and Exhibition (IPA Convex) 2024 in Tangerang, Banten.
Mahardi emphasized that Indonesia wants to be fully involved in the value chains of the CCS industry. For that reason, in addition to cooperation in research, development, and deployment, it also needs capacity building.
Through capacity building, he said, the government can allocate adequate human resources and CCS technology.
He underscored that capacity building is not only needed by technical workers who are engaged directly with the CCS, but also at the levels of community, government, and parliament.
"We have discussed that CCS has been technologically proven to be capable of large-scale decarbonization. Thus, everyone must understand what CCS is, why CCS is important, and why we have to work together," he said.
On that occasion, he also talked about the ISO/TC 265 meeting, which will be held in Indonesia in June 2024.
He said that the meeting will aim to encourage ministries to create regulations related to CCS based on internationally agreed standards.
ISO/TC 265 develops standards for carbon dioxide capture, transportation, and geological storage.
According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the potential of carbon storage in former reservoirs in oil and gas fields in Indonesia is estimated at 577 gigatons.
The government is optimistic that CCS can provide significant economic benefits to Indonesia.
Besides helping reduce carbon emissions, it can create new jobs and encourage economic growth in related sectors such as technology, manufacturing, and services.
