"Accession is a country that is in the process of becoming a member. Since 2007, Indonesia has been an OECD partner along with Brazil, India, China, and South Africa," he said after attending an internal meeting on Indonesia's membership at the OECD in Jakarta on Thursday.
He noted that Indonesia's application for permanent OECD membership had been received through the Ministerial Council Meeting to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the OECD Southeast Asia Regional Program (SEARP) in Paris two weeks ago.
In the SEARP agenda led by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida as the OECD chairman, Hartarto reported that Indonesia's request for accession along with Argentina had been received by the OECD.
He elaborated that the duration of Indonesia's accession for OECD permanent membership is relatively faster than that of Argentina.
"Argentina waited for five years. Meanwhile, Indonesia's process was around seven months," the minister revealed.
He noted that several countries, such as Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Peru, and Romania, had the same status as Indonesia. The process for the list of countries takes an average of more than two years, and even Brazil is approaching five years.
Achieving the target of the seven-month accession period, Hartarto said that Indonesia will take a cue from Chile as a country with the fastest achievement of completing accession in three years.
Following the accession, Indonesia will establish a memorandum covering 26 sectors, including finance, economics, and anti-corruption, in the OECD steering committee.
"Based on the president's direction, we will establish a Project Management Office under the Coordinating Ministry, where it will cover all ministries and oversee the transformation process for becoming a part of the OECD," he addressed.
As a follow-up to this agenda, OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann has been scheduled to meet President Joko Widodo in Indonesia on May 28–29.
