Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Library (Perpusnas), here on Friday, aimed to enliven literacy activities in rural areas by providing books based on people's interests to celebrate the 2024 National Book Day and the 44th Perpusnas Birthday.

"After we studied it, the ongoing problem is the shortage of books that are based on the people's interests. For that, we launched the Village Literacy Movement, as we want to build literacy where the community is active," Perpusnas Acting Head Aminudin Azis remarked.

Vice President Ma'ruf Amin also attended the launch of the village literacy movement program.

On that occasion, the Perpusnas also launched several initiatives, such as building reading spaces or reading parks in 10 thousand villages. The library will also support this by providing one thousand books for every reading space.

"This year, we will build reading spaces and parks in 10 thousand villages. Hopefully, this program will continue next year. In addition, we have the Social Inclusion-based Library Transformation," he remarked.

He expressed hope that the Village Literacy Movement would motivate people to transform knowledge into creative works that can eventually result in economic benefits.

"For example, they learn how to understand waste processing in those community reading parks. The waste is then processed into productive and high-value goods, which can increase income and improve welfare," Aziz remarked.

Through this movement, which is the result of Perpusnas' collaboration with various parties, increasing community literacy will no longer be carried out individually and separately.

"There are two keys that become our guidance, so we can move together, (with) the first is the understanding of the importance of literacy, and secondly, the readiness to do the activities together, so there is a perspective that building literacy should be done together," he stated.
