Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment and Forestry Ministry (KLHK) is bolstering the role of the young generation and Adiwiyata schools in water conservation to prepare them to face issues related to water resources that are crucial for life.

In a statement received here on Friday, Head of the Human Resources Counseling and Development Agency (BP2SDM) Ade Palguna Ruteka stated that KLHK is tasked with increasing capacity and involving members of the younger generation, given that they have creativity, energy, and the ability to create innovation in order to encourage transformative change in water conservation.

"It is very encouraging to see how the government, schools, business world, and civil society are working together to pay attention and support in increasing the environmental capacity of society," he remarked at a discussion on the sidelines of the World Water Forum (WWF), Bali, Wednesday (May 22).

"Through collaborative initiatives, we seek to address current and future sustainable water resource challenges," he affirmed.

In the discussion with invitees also comprising the Adiwiyata Cadre students, Head of the Environment and Forestry Generation Development Center (PPGLHK) KLHK Sinta Saptarina Soemiarno accentuated the Indonesian Government's commitment to developing environmental education.

This was marked by the formation of the Adiwiyata School Program or Schools that have the Environmental Care and Culture Movement in Schools (GPBLHS) in 2006, starting from 10 pilot schools on the island of Java.

By the end of 2023, the number of Adiwiyata Schools had grown to reach around 28,270 at the district/city, provincial, national, and independent levels.

She said one of the areas of focus in environmental education is the importance of water, which is a natural resource essential for human life and the earth's ecosystem.

She pointed out that access to sanitary facilities and clean water, however, remains a challenge in several regions across the world and that the effects of climate change are exerting greater strain on the availability of water resources.

"Environmental education implemented from an early age is important to change behavior that is more environmentally friendly and improves the quality of the environment," Soemiarno affirmed.
