"We have utilized jamu as a diplomatically tool by introducing it to the world at international scale events," Wardani informed at the 2024 National Jamu Day commemoration event here on Monday.
She noted that Indonesia has a wealth of resources and biodiversity to make a variety of quality jamu products that can help maintain people's fitness and even treat diseases.
However, less than 20 percent of nutritious plants in Indonesia are used as jamu ingredients.
According to her, the popularity of jamu increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people consumed it to maintain their health and endurance.
In December 2023, UNESCO designated jamu as an intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia.
Therefore, the momentum of 2024 National Jamu Day with the theme "National Awakening Through Jamu based on the Djampi Oesodo Philosophy as the Cultural & Spiritual Heritage of the Archipelago" can support the utilization of local plants that have health properties.
Wardani said that to support this, the government has issued Presidential Regulation Number 54 of 2023 concerning the Development and Utilization of Jamu.
The Presidential Regulation regulates the development and utilization of herbal drink jamu and is meant as a guideline for ministries/agencies and regional governments to improve the economy, competitiveness, and develop human resources in developing jamu.
Furthermore, she said that the consumption of jamu as a wellness drink is in line with the objectives of Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health, which prescribes that the health system prioritize preventive efforts through a healthy lifestyle.
