Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) has said that collaborating with indigenous and local communities will be its main strategy to preserve forests and realize the vision of Nusantara (IKN) as a sustainable forest city.

At the International Conference on Forest City here on Wednesday, deputy for environment and natural resources at the OIKN, Myrna Safitri, said that indigenous and local communities have an important role in preserving the environment, especially in protecting biodiversity.

The steps that will be taken by the authority will include the issuance of a policy recognizing the local wisdom and knowledge of indigenous communities. The policy will serve as the basis for sustainable and inclusive forest management.

"We are now in the process of preparing a community forestry policy because when we have an agroforestry strategy; there must be a clear policy regarding the legality of local communities in managing forests," Safitri said.

In addition, the OIKN will prepare a community forest policy.

A community forest is a form of social forestry scheme designed by the government under which community groups manage or utilize forest areas. The scheme aims to improve welfare and environmental sustainability.

Safitri said that such a policy would provide legal certainty to indigenous and local communities in managing forests and surrounding natural resources.

She added that currently, the OIKN is also focusing on improving natural resource management and land use at IKN.

The strategies to achieve this include preparing a spatial planning policy with the target of protecting 65 percent of the land.

To restore the ecological function of Kalimantan's forests, 65 percent of the IKN area will be designated as protected.

Meanwhile, 25 percent will be dedicated to infrastructure development in IKN, and the remaining 10 percent will be earmarked for agriculture.

"We want to strictly adhere to the spatial plan and also the master plan in detail. So that is our way to improve governance in forest city development," she added.
