Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) called on residents living in coastal areas to be aware of coastal floods that can potentially occur from June 4 to June 10, 2024.

Head of Jakarta BPBD, Isnawa Adji, noted in his statement received here on Monday that the highest tides are expected to occur from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. local time.

He referred to the Tanjung Priok Maritime Meteorological Station that predicted coastal flooding and issued an early warning informing of the phenomenon of maximum tides along with the full moon phase.

This could lead to coastal flooding in the northern area of Jakarta, the station stated.

Hence, Adji underscored the need for residents living in northern Jakarta, such as Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Penjaringan, Pluit, Ancol, Kamal, Marunda, Cilincing, Kalibaru, and Muara Angke, to anticipate the impact of high sea tides.

He remarked that the public can monitor the latest information about sea waves on the https://bpbd.jakarta.go.id/gelombanglaut website.

"If you encounter an emergency, immediately contact the call center at Jakarta Siaga 112," he remarked.

Earlier, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) also forecast that Jakarta's coastal areas could potentially be hit by coastal floods on May 21-29, 2024, due to the full moon phase.

The full moon phase is said to be able to increase the sea tide height.

According to the BMKG analysis, this condition varies in each region, but in general, it is said to have an impact on community activities around ports and coasts.

The Jakarta BPBD also said it has prepared boats and ring buoys in Jakarta's areas that are prone to coastal flooding.

"We ensure that supporting facilities and infrastructure for handling flood-prone villages, such as boats, life buoys, and life jackets, are ready to function," the agency's head of Data and Information Processing Unit, Michael Sitanggang, remarked.
