Ambassador Macocha Moshe Tembele delivered the offer when he paid a courtesy call to the UI campus in Depok, West Java, on June 4, 2024, during which he was received by UI Secretary Agustin Kusumayati.
Speaking in Depok on Tuesday, Kusumayati stated that the UI and UDSM would explore opportunities to conduct several joint projects, including the student exchange program and research and innovation activities with public impact.
The UI collaboration with UDSM is expected to encourage the two universities' scholars and researchers to contribute to scientific breakthroughs with global impacts on societies, she remarked.
The collaboration with UDSM is also relevant to UI's mission of protecting the environment through education and community service and developing innovation to support the Sustainable Development Goals, she added.
To this end, research projects on energy and mineral resources, especially on ways to derive benefits from sustainable natural resources, are important, she emphasized.
In this regard, UI has the metallurgy engineering and geology programs, so that the collaboration with UDSM could be implemented, she remarked, adding that UI had earlier collaborated with several Tanzanian universities.
As revealed on its official website, UDSM is the oldest and premier public university in Tanzania.
Before becoming a full-fledged university on July 1, 1970, it was founded as the University College Dar es Salaam (UCD), an affiliate college of the University of London, on October 25, 1961.
The UDSM campus area occupies a land area of 1,625 acres on the observation hill, well-known as Mlimani in Kiswahili, which is about 13 kilometers on the western side of the city of Dar es Salaam.
The university currently manages 370 programs, including 99 PhD by thesis, 142 Masters, 10 Postgraduate, and 92 undergraduate, with almost 40 thousand enrolled students in the 2020-2021 academic year.
Meanwhile, UI, whose main campus is located in Depok, West Java, has been adjudged the best university in Indonesia. In the annual ranking of global universities released by Webometrics in January 2023, UI was named the best university in Indonesia.
UI Chancellor Prof. Ari Kuncoro noted in a recent statement that the university has upheld its commitment to being an innovative, independent, inclusive, dignified, and leading higher educational institution in Southeast Asia and the world.
One of the endeavors to globalize education and research has been pursuing collaborations with reputable overseas universities.
