At an online discussion that was followed from here on Wednesday, he informed that as of January 2024, Indonesia has carried out peat restoration on 3.9 million hectares of concession land and 52,430 hectares of community-owned areas.
He said that the restoration and rehabilitation were carried out through the "3R" effort, namely rewetting, revegetation or replanting, and economic revitalization of local communities around the peat ecosystem.
"Peat restoration by (using the) rewetting approach must be based on peat hydrological unity (KHG). I always emphasize this, as it cannot be done partially," he added.
It is also necessary to be consistent in implementing the policies that have been set, he continued.
The policies, he said, include paying attention to the validity of the right to utilize protected peat ecosystems and Government Regulation Number 71 of 2014 concerning the Protection and Management of Peat Ecosystems.
He added that the restoration of the peatland ecosystem to its original state will require a lot of time and consistent policy implementation.
Dohong also stressed the need to ensure the sustainability of peatland restoration efforts that require collaboration with other parties.
"This orchestration involves many parties such as companies, local governments, and communities. How do we orchestrate this together? Hence, I once proposed to establish a water council and the KHG council so that we can coordinate well with each other," he said.
He further said that peat ecosystem restoration must be integrated into several government planning documents, including the National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) and local government performance evaluation.
