Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - The Indonesian contingent won four gold medals and one silver in pencak silat (Indonesian martial arts) at the ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024, held at Malang Muhammadiyah University (UMM) Dome, East Java, on Thursday.

The gold medals were won by Amigos in the men's singles, Nadia Ramadona in the women's singles, Ismi Nurcahyani and Alvi Rukmana in the women's doubles, and Shelsa Odilia and other athletes in the women's group event.

Meanwhile, the silver medal was won by Leonard Waroka and Irfan Maulana in the men's doubles event.

Amigos, in a statement received here on Thursday, expressed gratitude over his win against Malaysia's Muhammad Haffiez with a score of 9.950.

"I am grateful to be able to present this gold medal to Indonesia at the AUG. I dedicate this gold to my mother, my campus Jakarta State University (UNJ), and the Indonesian people," he remarked.

He also expressed pride over making a debut in the biennial sports event and getting support from the Indonesian people.

"At first, I was a little bit nervous. However, before the final round, I studied the opponent's movements on YouTube. From there, I was confident and determined to get gold," he added.

He said he hoped to train at the national training center and represent Indonesia in international sports events in the future.

The ASEAN University Games are being held from June 25 to July 6, 2024, in Surabaya and Malang, East Java.

According to the AUG website, the Indonesian contingent has so far bagged 94 gold, 76 silver, and 52 bronze medals, securing the lead in the medal tally.
