President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Monday highlighted that the issuance of a presidential decree on the relocation of Indonesia's capital from Jakarta to Nusantara capital city (IKN) will depend on the progress of IKN's construction.
He said that the decree may be issued either by his administration, whose tenure will end in October 2024, or the next government led by Prabowo Subianto.
"The presidential decree might be issued before or after October, depending on the situation in the field," he told reporters after sending off aid for Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan from Halim Perdanakusuma, Jakarta.
The head of state affirmed that he would not insist on signing the decree to relocate the seat of government if the IKN has yet to reach the preferred readiness level.
"We will continue monitoring the situation in the field first," he added.
Responding to a question about his plan to start working in Nusantara this month, he said that he is still waiting for the water and electricity supply to be ready.
"It is a matter of the readiness of water and electricity. If everything is ready, I will relocate (my office)," he added.
Earlier, chief of the Presidential Secretariat, Heru Budi Hartono, said that Widodo is still waiting for basic infrastructure to be readied in Nusantara before relocating his office from Jakarta.
"We will monitor the progress in the development of infrastructure and facilities there," he added during the launch of the logo for the 79th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence Day in Jakarta on June 24, 2024.
The vital construction projects whose completion is being pursued include the water supply infrastructure and the Nusantara Airport in North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan.
"We need water and an airport. Earlier, it was revealed that the airport's construction is targeted to be completed by August. I was also told that the airport still requires some work," he said.
