Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture held the "The Role of Museums in Education, Research and Character Development" focus group discussion (FGD) to bolster coordination in museum management.

The ministry held this FGD in collaboration with the Jelajah Community in Yogyakarta on Wednesday to strengthen coordination, synchronization, and monitoring across stakeholders in museum management.

The ministry's Deputy for Coordination of Mental Revolution, Cultural Advancement, and Sports Achievement, Warsito, underscored the need for stronger synergy between stakeholders engaged in developing the nation's cultural values, identity, character, self-esteem, and national pride.

"This is because museums with their various collections contain all the (national) character values which include religious, nationalist, mutual cooperation, integrity, and independence," he remarked.

In addition to housing objects for display, museums serve as centers for research, education, and cultural advancement.

Warsito advised museum managers to be innovative and adaptive to the developments in science and technology.

He also expressed optimism that local governments would help expand the museums' role in educating students.

Meanwhile, Wiendu Nuryanti, who served as deputy minister of education and culture for the 2011-2014 period, stated that museums are the most apt places to find sources of historical information and to learn about history.

"There are many objects that are used as learning mediums in the museum. It is useful as a means of increasing understanding of historical events for the community, especially students," she remarked.

Nuryanti underscored the dire need for support from all related parties, such as the Indonesian Museum Association (AMI), the Association of Regional Museums (AMIDA), and other components of society to advance museums in the country.
