Jakarta (ANTARA) - Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko reported the reconciliation of the social conflict between Pelauw and Kariuw residents on Haruku Island in Central Maluku district, Maluku, and confirmed the return of 1,245 refugees.

He conveyed this after chairing a meeting with the Maluku acting governor, the Central Maluku acting head, and representatives from related ministries, state agencies, the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), and the National Police (Polri) in Jakarta on Monday.

"This conflict occurred from January 2022 to 2024. During that period, 1,245 people fled to Aboru," Moeldoko told reporters.

Currently, all 1,245 people who took refuge in Aboru have returned to Kariuw Village or their place of origin.

Moeldoko emphasized that the conflict on Haruku Island was not religious but rather a dispute over regional borders.

Community leaders from each region also agreed that the previously disputed land and the sacred stones contested by the Pelauw community would become cultural heritage.

Moeldoko reminded the public to avoid being easily provoked by any party to prevent the future recurrence of the dispute.

The social conflict began at the end of January 2022, triggered by residents who cultivated a disputed land plot.

Apart from causing deaths and injuries, this clash also resulted in the burning of residents' houses, places of worship, and several public facilities. As a result, 1,234 people, from 330 families, were forced to flee.

The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) comprehensively monitored developments related to this social conflict. The KSP also conducted field verification by visiting conflict and refugee locations.

More than 800 people were still housed in tents and would be relocated to 207 government-built housing units.

Moeldoko also encouraged relevant ministries and institutions to immediately complete the plantation seed and livestock assistance scheme for conflict-affected residents.

"The current situation is much better than several years ago," he said. "We expect the local government to monitor the recovery process."
