"Parliamentary cooperation can help to share experiences and best practices in finding joint solutions. It can bridge (the gap between) people's aspirations and public policy," he remarked at the Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) event in Jakarta on Thursday.
He lauded the Indonesia-Pacific parliamentary partnership as a strategic initiative to strengthen partnerships in the Pacific.
"It is important to strengthen this partnership, especially during big challenges such as economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions between big powers, the threat of climate change, and various crises," he remarked.
The head of state then outlined three important areas that required joint and immediate handling.
First, regarding climate change, he pointed out that the potential for sea level rise of up to one meter by 2100, as estimated by the UN, is a major threat to the region. Hence, to mitigate the threat, it is necessary to strengthen parliamentary advocacy by adapting policies and increasing infrastructure and environmental cooperation.
The second area of focus is the blue economy, which has vast regional potential. According to the World Bank, if managed sustainably, this sector has the potential to contribute up to 10 percent of the gross domestic product.

Hence, the parliament needs to encourage regional connectivity, collaboration in law enforcement, and conservation of marine resources.
The third area to be prioritized is human resource development through inclusive education and training, including for women and youth, to boost productivity and innovation.
"Parliament should formulate regulations to encourage people-to-people cooperation and share knowledge and experience for all levels of society," Jokowi emphasized.
In addition, he addressed the importance of developing the Pacific region to optimize its potential to improve people's welfare.
"Through this parliamentary partnership, let us strengthen the spirit of togetherness, mutual trust, and mutual respect, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity," he remarked.
The president believes that strong collaboration efforts are instrumental in maintaining stability and achieving prosperity in the Pacific region.
