Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated that the government has yet to discuss the mandatory insurance policy for motorized vehicles that the Financial Services Authority (OJK) plans to introduce in 2025.

"There has been no meeting regarding that issue," he said briefly after attending the Golden Visa Grand Launch event in Jakarta on Thursday.

Earlier, the OJK stated that the Mandatory Insurance Program, including vehicle insurance, awaits the issuance of government regulations (PP) as a legal assurance for its implementation, such as the scope and effective time for implementing the program.

"The third-party liability Mandatory Insurance Program related to traffic accidents is intended to provide better financial protection to the public," OJK's Chief Executive Supervisor for Insurance, Guarantee, and Pension Fund, Ogi Prastomiyono, stated on July 18.

According to Prastomiyono, this program will reduce the financial burden borne by vehicle owners in the event of an accident and will shape better driving behavior in the future.

He believes that by increasing protection against risks, people will have better protection and feel safer, and it can also encourage overall economic growth.

Law Number 4 of 2023 concerning Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector (UU P2SK) regulates that the government can establish a Mandatory Insurance Program according to needs, including third-party liability insurance for all motor vehicles related to traffic accidents, fire insurance, and home insurance against disaster risks.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has also responded to the mandatory insurance policy plan for motorized vehicles.

He noted that the entire ecosystem, including insurance financing institutions, must play a role in supporting the automotive industry in Indonesia.

"To improve the automotive industry, the entire ecosystem must play a role, including insurance finance," he remarked after attending the opening of the 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) at ICE BSD, Tangerang, Banten, on July 18.
