Penajam Paser Utara (ANTARA) - The Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN), in collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower, is conducting job training for the residents of partner regions of Nusantara city (IKN), the new national capital in East Kalimantan province.

The training is being provided to 418 participants from North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara, two areas that are a part of the delineation of IKN, director of community empowerment for sociocultural and human empowerment at OIKN, Conrita Ermanto, said in Penajam on Thursday.

The ministry has prepared vocational and productivity training centers (BPVPs) in a number of regions in Indonesia to provide training to local residents, including in the cities of Samarinda, Semarang, and Medan, he informed.

Customer service training is being carried out at BPVP Semarang, while training in vocations such as welding, cabinet making, spray finishing techniques, food processing, surveying, and drafting documents using computer software is being conducted at BPVP Medan.

Meanwhile, heavy equipment operator classes (excavator operators), bread and cake-making training, stamped batik training, and sewing are being conducted at BPVP Samarinda.

Security training and education of 160 local residents has been carried out at BPVP Samarinda, which has prepared security personnel for a number of offices at IKN.

"The training participants are from indigenous communities in the Nusantara city (IKN) delineation area," he revealed.

"OIKN is also preparing training in traditional crafts such as weaving and carving, which is prioritized for participants from indigenous communities," he added.

The program, according to Ermanto, aims to prepare local communities to become more independent and prosperous, though many residents from outside the region will come to IKN.

BPVP Samarinda's empowerment sub-coordinator, Nur Juliani, said that local residents are not only being trained to work in the industrial sector, but also taught about increasing productivity so that they can increase their income and not be burdened by the presence of IKN.

"Local residents and those around Nusantara city must be ready to compete with newcomers; we don't want local residents to only become spectators," she added.
