Danis Sumadilaga, chairman of the ministry's task force for IKN infrastructure development, said on Saturday that the basins cover an area of over one hectare in the Central Government Core Area (KIPP), which is equipped with pedestrian paths, a jogging track, and public spaces.
The construction of 14 basins has been completed. At one of the basins, the water flows among vegetation, including green trees, colorful flowers, and lush grass.
A green hilly area features a wooden bridge and a jogging track that crosses the basin, located behind the Presidential Palace in the KIPP.
"The basins store water as part of flood control," Sumadilaga said, adding that they capture rainwater in the new capital city, which has wavy terrain.
"More importantly, this is a public area," he said. "People can use this area for social interaction and activities."
The construction of the retention basins is part of the government's effort to make Nusantara a forest city, with 75 percent of its area being green spaces.
"This public area will be planted with thousands of trees, transforming it into green spaces," Sumadilaga said.
