Jakarta (ANTARA) - Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Bintang Puspayoga urged all parties, including the government, state agencies, the police, the private sector, and the community, to fight against human trafficking in Indonesia.

"Human trafficking is a serious crime against humanity. Various modes of this crime continue to develop from time to time," she said here on Wednesday.

She noted that human trafficking is a transnational crime that involves networks of perpetrators from across countries.

The ministry's Online Information System for the Protection of Women and Children (SIMPONI PPA) recorded 252 adult victims and 206 child victims of human trafficking in 2023.

Puspayoga said that the majority of human trafficking victims in Indonesia included migrant workers and domestic helpers. Trafficking cases also involved fraudulent internship programs, online gambling, or other online frauds, she added.

Trafficking has a significant impact on women and children, who are often syndicates' main targets.

The minister asked all parties to increase vigilance against the crime.

"The large number of women and child victims of human trafficking illustrates that there are many gaps that must be closed to prevent trafficking," the minister added.

Those gaps are in the form of regulations, institutions, working mechanisms, infrastructure, and human resources, she pointed out.

The most important thing is to strengthen commitment, awareness, and synergy among parties to prevent and handle human trafficking, she added.
