Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President-elect and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto has voiced support for Russia's plan to open a consulate general in Bali.

During his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday, Prabowo expressed his belief that a Russian consulate in Bali could strengthen bilateral relations and increase tourism cooperation between the two countries.

"We fully support this plan," Prabowo told Putin, as broadcast by foreign TV stations covering the event live from the Kremlin.

The Russian government announced plans on July 20 to open a consulate general in Denpasar, Bali.

During the 30-minute meeting with Putin, Prabowo also expressed support for the launch of more direct flights from Moscow to Denpasar and explored opportunities for cooperation in developing nuclear power generator technology.

"I have discussed with several institutions in Russia regarding the nuclear energy sector," Prabowo said. "We might have the possibility to work together on modular reactors and main reactors."

Nuclear reactors are important components of nuclear power plants. Russia is currently one of the countries where electricity needs are supplied by nuclear power.

Prabowo further stated that Indonesia's stance and commitment to increasing cooperation with Russia would not change amid the government transition.

During the meeting at the Kremlin, Prabowo was accompanied by his aide Teddy Indra Wijaya, while Putin was accompanied by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, and Presidential Advisor for Foreign Affairs, Yury Ushakov.

Putin is the fourth world leader that Prabowo has met during his series of foreign visits since last week.

Prabowo earlier met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Belgrade, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.
