Balikpapan (ANTARA) - Sepinggan International Airport in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, has increased flight options to accommodate growing passenger demand for the future capital, Nusantara, ahead of Indonesia's Independence Day celebration.

"There are many slots for additional flights, from only 138 flights (per day) to 156 flights," the airport's general manager, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, told ANTARA on Friday.

In addition to adding flights, Sepinggan Airport has increased the number of workers to support smooth services.

Shahab said he hopes that in the future, the capacity of Sepinggan Airport can be one-third or even the same as that of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Banten, which serves air passengers traveling to Jakarta.

"Currently, (our capacity) is only 6 million passengers (per year)," he informed.

After year-long preparations, Sepinggan Airport is ready to support the upcoming Independence Day celebration in Nusantara on August 17, he affirmed.

The airport management has also carried out some improvement projects, such as renovating the toll gate area to the exit, preparing the parking building, carrying out painting work, and moving passenger flow.

"The most crucial thing is the flight area, we have paved the runway, prepared many aircraft, we have repaired all the apron areas and also the taxiway. So, in principle, there are no problems," Shahab said.
